CUSTOM METAL FABRICATION
Austin wants metal that looks intentional. Flat-bar railings on an East Austin modern build, a ranch entry gate off a Hill Country caliche road, a steel frame for an outdoor kitchen in Westlake. Alpha Mobile Welding TX coordinates custom fabrication through partner welders across Travis, Williamson and Hays counties. Some partners build in their own workshops; fit-up and installation happen at your property. Send a sketch, dimensions and photos and we confirm a partner, a finish and a lead time.
Lead times depend on partner shop schedules and finish turnaround.
Fabrication, not just repair
Fabrication means building a piece that does not exist yet, to your dimensions and finish, then installing it. A horizontal-bar guard for a steep lot in Travis Heights, a cantilever gate across a Dripping Springs driveway, a boat-lift bracket at Lake Travis. Repair of existing metal is handled on our Austin mobile welding page; this page covers new work.
Austin sits between two climates. The limestone and caliche of the Hill Country drain fast and stay dry; the Blackland Prairie east of I-35 holds moisture and heaves with the seasons. Summers run above 100 degrees for weeks and intense UV fades cheap paint quickly. Partners quote powder coat over zinc primer for visible work, hot-dip galvanizing for ranch gates and fence lines, and weathering steel where a client wants the patina look on purpose.
Alpha does not own a shop. We match each request to a partner with the right setup: a plasma table for flat-bar and plate panels, a tube bender for rail returns, a spool gun for aluminum dock hardware. You get one contact, one written estimate and one schedule.
Typical Austin requests
The fabrication requests that come up most often from Austin homeowners, builders, lake property owners and ranch managers.
Horizontal flat-bar, vertical picket and cable-ready steel guards for East Austin, Bouldin and Mueller homes, built to the 42 inch guard height and powder coated black or clear-coated raw.
Pipe-frame and tube-frame entry gates for Dripping Springs, Bee Cave and Wimberley properties, with cross bracing, heavy hinges on 6 inch pipe posts, and galvanized or powder coat finish for full sun.
Exterior handrails for the hillside lots in Westlake, Rollingwood and West Lake Hills, following stepped grades and returning cleanly into limestone or stucco.
Welded steel frames for outdoor kitchens, pergolas and shade structures, sized for stone veneer or cladding and anchored to slabs or piers.
Aluminum and galvanized steel brackets, cleats, ladders, boat-lift adapters and trailer bunks for Lake Travis, Lake Austin and Lake LBJ properties.
Gate hinges, post brackets, mailbox and sign mounts designed to anchor into limestone block and rubble walls without cracking the stone.
Fabrication services
Most projects fit one of these categories; mixed requests are quoted as one job.
Swing, cantilever and slide gates in tube or pipe, framed square with weld-on hinges, latch posts and operator pads, for city driveways and ranch entries alike.
Interior and exterior rails in flat bar, tube or stainless, with graspable handrail profiles and closed returns, test-fit on site and anchored into concrete, steel or masonry.
Awning frames, screen panels, planter boxes, fireplace surrounds and blackened steel accents for Austin builders and designers, finished to the sample you approve.
Pipe fence corners, cattle guards, gate posts and equipment brackets for Hill Country acreage, built heavy and galvanized for decades in the sun.
Dock brackets, ladders, boat-lift adapters, trailer bunks and winch mounts in aluminum or galvanized steel for lake homes and boat owners.
Mounting brackets, equipment stands, workbench and machine frames cut from plate and tube to your drawing, with holes drilled to your bolt pattern.
Why Alpha Welding
Finding a fabricator with open shop time and an eye for finish is the hard part; we handle that matching.
Describe the piece once. We find the partner whose equipment and schedule fit instead of you calling shops from Round Rock to Kyle.
Powder coat, galvanizing, clear coat or weathering steel is chosen in the estimate so the piece looks right and lasts in Central Texas sun.
Pieces are fabricated on a table with a saw and a square, then installed by a mobile welder who can adjust to the real slope and stone.
We quote the lead time the partner is actually running, including coating turnaround, not a date meant to win the job.
How it works
Four steps from idea to installed metal.
A sketch, rough dimensions, photos of the site and a note on finish or style. Architect drawings help but are optional.
We match the job to a partner welder, review material and finish options with you, and send a written estimate.
The partner builds the piece in their workshop or on site, then sends it for powder coat or galvanizing if quoted.
The part is delivered, test-fit, anchored and welded in place. You walk the job before it is closed out.
Local guide
A few local realities shape every Austin fabrication estimate, from the anchor type to the day the installer arrives.
New builds and remodels in East Austin, Bouldin Creek, Zilker and Mueller lean toward clean lines: horizontal flat bar, slim vertical pickets, or posts prepared for cable infill. Partners fabricate from 1/2 by 2 inch flat bar and 1.5 inch square tube, grind every visible weld flush, and finish in matte black powder coat or a clear coat over raw steel. Guards must meet the 42 inch height and 4 inch sphere rule; horizontal infill is allowed in Austin but inspectors look closely at spacing, so the design is checked before cutting.
West of Mopac the lots get bigger and the gates get heavier. Dripping Springs, Bee Cave, Spicewood and Wimberley properties want entry gates in 2 inch pipe or 2×4 tube, 14 to 20 feet wide, with diagonal bracing, weld-on hinges on 6 inch pipe posts and a mounting pad for a solar opener. Posts go into rock-drilled holes or oversized concrete footings because caliche does not hold a shallow post. Hot-dip galvanizing is the practical finish for full sun; powder coat over galvanizing when a color is wanted. Pipe fence corners and cattle guards are quoted alongside the gate.
Westlake, Rollingwood, Tarrytown and the hills along Lake Austin are built on slopes and limestone. Handrails follow stepped grades and return into stone, so partners template on site before fabricating. Anchoring into limestone block and rubble walls takes care: epoxy anchors or through-bolts with plates rather than wedge anchors that split the stone. Brackets for gates, mailboxes and signs on these walls get wide base plates to spread the load. Installation often means a mobile welder finishing joints in place after the shop-built sections are set.
Austin lives outside eight months a year, and builders ask for welded steel frames for outdoor kitchens, pergolas, shade sails and screened porches. Kitchen frames are built from 2×2 tube to the appliance cutout dimensions, primed for stone or stucco veneer, and leveled on the slab. Pergola and shade frames are sized for wind and anchored to piers or footings; anything with a long span or attached to the house may need a permit and an engineer’s letter, which we flag in the estimate.
Lake properties from Lakeway to Volente need dock brackets, ladders, boat-lift adapters, cleats and trailer bunks that handle fluctuating water levels. Partners build these in 6061 aluminum with 5356 filler, or in galvanized steel where strength matters more than weight. Aluminum parts touching steel get isolated with nylon or stainless hardware to prevent galvanic corrosion. Floating dock work is scheduled around lake conditions, and anything touching a fuel system is flagged for a partner comfortable with that scope.
The City of Austin permits tall fences, most structures attached to a house and many wall-mounted rails; Westlake Hills, Rollingwood and the Hill Country towns have their own rules, and lakeside docks fall under LCRA review. Communities such as Steiner Ranch, Circle C and Avery Ranch require ARC approval. Lead times typically run one to two weeks for brackets, two to four weeks for gates and railings, plus a week when a part goes out for coating.
Send the drawing and a site photo. A partner can usually confirm whether it is buildable as drawn and what it will cost within a day.
Central Texas coverage
Partner shops and installers are spread across the Austin metro and the I-35 corridor, and coverage is confirmed per address when you request an estimate. Hill Country and lake addresses may carry a trip charge stated before work begins.
FAQs
Straight answers to what clients ask before they send a sketch.
No. Alpha coordinates fabrication through independent partner welders across Central Texas. Some partners operate their own workshops with tables, saws and plasma or bending equipment; others build on site. We match your project to the right one and manage the estimate and schedule.
Call 979-250-7486 or use the estimate form with a sketch, dimensions, photos and any architect detail or HOA guideline. We confirm feasibility, material and lead time with a partner and send a written quote before any steel is cut.
Yes. Horizontal and vertical flat-bar guards, slim tube pickets and cable-ready posts are common Austin requests. Partners grind visible welds flush and finish in matte black powder coat or clear-coated raw steel, and check infill spacing against code before cutting.
Powder coat over a zinc-rich primer for visible residential work. Hot-dip galvanizing for ranch gates, pipe fence and anything in full sun for decades. Weathering steel is an option when a client wants the patina look on purpose. Cheap paint chalks within a couple of summers.
Yes, with care. Partners use epoxy anchors or through-bolts with plates rather than expansion anchors that split stone, and template on site before fabricating so the rail returns cleanly into the wall. Rubble walls sometimes need a welded base plate to spread the load.
Brackets and small frames usually run one to two weeks. Gates, railings and outdoor kitchen frames run two to four weeks depending on shop load, plus roughly a week for powder coat or galvanizing. We quote a realistic window based on the partner’s current schedule.
Yes, through partners equipped for pipe and heavy tube. Entry gates up to 20 feet, cattle guards, pipe fence corners and posts set in rock-drilled footings are routine Hill Country work. Solar opener pads can be welded on at the shop.
Yes. Dock brackets, ladders, boat-lift adapters, cleats and trailer bunks are built in 6061 aluminum or galvanized steel. Aluminum-to-steel contact is isolated to prevent corrosion, and dock work is scheduled around lake levels.
Installation is quoted as part of the project. The partner builds in the shop, then a mobile welder delivers, test-fits, anchors and welds the piece at your property, finishing joints in place where the slope or stone requires it.
Estimates reflect material weight and grade, cutting and welding hours, finish cost and delivery or installation time. We send a written total with assumptions listed; changes after approval are re-quoted before the partner proceeds.
