MOBILE WELDING IN NEW BRAUNFELS, TX
New Braunfels is a river town that happens to be one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas, and both halves of that story keep welders busy. River-house docks and railings rust on the Comal and Guadalupe. Boat trailers for Canyon Lake crack at the tongue. New subdivisions off FM 306 and SH-46 need gates, fences and handrails, and ranch entrances toward Seguin and Spring Branch still need a solid hinge post. Alpha Mobile Welding TX coordinates partner welders who drive to your address with a truck-mounted machine, so the work gets done where the metal sits.
Same-day and after-hours visits are subject to partner availability in Comal and Guadalupe counties.
On-site welding
A mobile welder arrives with an engine-driven welder/generator, leads, a grinder, clamps and a selection of filler metal, then sets up next to the job. Steel repairs are usually run with SMAW (stick) or FCAW because both handle wind and slightly rusty base metal better than bare-wire MIG. For aluminum pontoon rails, trailer ramps or dock hardware, the welder uses GMAW with a spool gun or GTAW (TIG) with 4043 or 5356 filler, and that work is done inside a garage or behind a windbreak so shielding gas is not blown off the puddle.
Preparation is what separates a weld that lasts from one that fails next summer. Paint, galvanizing and river scale are ground back to bright metal. Thick sections get a bevel so the root fuses. On cold January mornings, heavier steel is preheated to drive out moisture and slow cooling of the heat-affected zone. Fit-up is clamped square before the first tack so a gate still swings true after it cools.
Because the welder comes to you, there is no trailering a boat trailer across town or pulling a railing section off a deck above the river. Jobs are quoted from photos first, so you know the price range before anyone drives out I-35 or Loop 337.
Common repairs
River humidity, hard limestone ground and constant construction create a predictable list of repairs.
Steel railings on Comal and Guadalupe river houses rust at the base plates and post caps where water sits. Partners cut out rotted sections, sleeve or replace posts and weld new caps so water sheds instead of pooling.
Canyon Lake trailers crack at the tongue, winch stand and cross-member welds after years of ramp launches. The crack is V-ground to sound metal, welded in multiple passes and backed with a plate where the frame allows.
Gates on the ranch roads toward Seguin and Spring Branch sag when a hinge post leans in shallow limestone soil. Hinges are reset, posts reinforced with gussets and the gate re-hung so it clears the ground.
Outfitters along the rivers run steel tube racks, shuttle trailers and loading stands hard all summer. Broken rack uprights and cracked trailer frames are repaired on the lot, usually before the next weekend rush.
New builds off FM 306 and SH-46 have ornamental iron that was tack-welded at the factory. Pickets break loose, panels rack and latches fail. Partners re-weld joints and square the panels in place.
Shredder decks, skid steer attachments and utility trailers on Hill Country acreage take a beating from rock. Cracked frames and broken tabs are welded, and wear points get hardfacing where it makes sense.
Services
Partner welders handle residential, agricultural and light commercial work across the city and the lake.
Cracked brackets, broken hinges, rusted railings and failed structural tabs on homes, rentals and small businesses. Most steel repairs are stick or flux-core and finished with primer to slow the next round of rust.
Pontoon rails, trailer ramps, dock ladders and boat hardware welded with the right filler for the alloy. See the aluminum welding page for what works and what does not.
Boat, utility and livestock trailers: tongues, couplers, cross-members, fenders and ramp hinges. Safety-chain loops and jack mounts are checked while the welder is under the frame.
Ranch entrances, driveway gates and ornamental fence panels built or repaired on-site, with hinge posts sized for the span. Details on the gate welding and fence welding pages.
Deck railings, river-stair handrails and exterior stair stringers repaired or fabricated to fit. Anchors into limestone or concrete are discussed up front so the rail stays rigid.
Steel lintels, awning frames, canopy repairs and equipment stands for shops and restaurants. Load-bearing changes are done to an engineer’s drawing and the city permit process.
Why Alpha Welding
One phone call, one coordinator and a welder who already knows the job before the truck leaves.
You send pictures and an address; we confirm what is being welded, the process and a price range before scheduling.
Work is placed with partners who already run the I-35 and SH-46 corridors, which keeps travel charges reasonable.
If a job needs an engineer, a shop press or a certified inspector, we say so instead of welding something that should not be welded.
Slag chipped, welds ground where appearance matters, primer applied and the area swept before the truck leaves.
How it works
Four steps from first call to finished weld.
Text or upload photos of the damage, the surrounding area and anything that affects access, plus the street address.
We confirm the process, material, likely hours and a price range, and flag anything that needs engineering or shop work.
A partner welder is matched to the job and a window is set. Same-day is possible when a partner is free.
The welder preps, welds, checks the joint, applies primer where needed and leaves the site clean.
Local guide
A few local conditions change how a welding job is planned, priced and finished.
Properties along the Comal and Guadalupe sit in constant moisture, and the Gruene historic district has plenty of older iron that was never galvanized. Rust at the bottom of a railing post usually means the inside of the tube is worse than the outside. A good partner probes the wall thickness before welding; if the steel has thinned too far to hold a weld, the section is cut out and replaced rather than patched. After welding, the joint gets a zinc-rich primer and a top coat soon after, because bare steel on the river flashes rust almost immediately.
Much of New Braunfels sits on shallow Hill Country limestone with a thin cap of soil. That is a problem for gate posts and fence corners because a hole that should be 36 inches deep stops at 14 inches on rock. Partners either core the rock, pin the post with rebar epoxied into drilled holes, or weld a base plate and anchor it. Welding a sagging gate without fixing the post is wasted money, so the post is always checked first.
Trailers that live on the ramps at Canyon Lake see repeated dunking, which traps water inside box-section frames. Cracks start at the tongue-to-frame junction, the winch stand and the spring hanger welds. The repair is a V-groove to sound metal, a root pass and fill passes with 7018 or flux-core, and a fish plate when the frame geometry allows one. Partners will not weld a frame that has rusted through from the inside, and they will say so after a tap test. Aluminum trailers get 5356 filler on structural members.
Subdivisions along FM 306, SH-46 and Loop 337 are going up quickly, and builders often install pre-fabricated iron fencing and railings with minimal welding. When those joints let go, the fix is a proper weld on cleaned base metal, not another tack. New structural fabrication such as a cantilevered balcony bracket is built from an engineer’s sketch and checked against City of New Braunfels permit requirements before the first cut.
From late May through Labor Day, traffic around the water park, Gruene and the river outfitters can double a drive time, so partners usually schedule morning starts. Aluminum work is kept out of direct sun and wind, and a dark-painted gate in August can start from a base-metal temperature well over 120 degrees, which changes preheat and interpass planning. On acreage toward Spring Branch and Seguin, dry cedar litter and tall grass are a fire risk, so Comal County burn-ban status is checked, a radius is cleared and a fire watch is held after the last arc.
Send photos anyway. Rusted-through railings, cast parts and some trailer frames need replacement, and we will tell you before you pay for a visit.
Service area
Partner welders cover New Braunfels, Gruene, Canyon Lake and the surrounding Comal and Guadalupe County roads as part of the San Antonio metro region. Coverage and travel charges are confirmed for each address when you request an estimate, since partner availability shifts week to week.
FAQs
Straight answers to what callers ask before booking.
Usually yes, provided the welder can stand safely and the base metal is sound. Partners set up on the dock or bank, run leads from the truck and use stick or flux-core because wind off the water is constant. Rusted-through posts are replaced, not welded over.
Yes. Aluminum trailer frames and pontoon rails are welded with MIG spool gun or TIG using 5356 or 4043 filler depending on the alloy and load. The work is done out of the wind, and cracked cast fittings are replaced since cast aluminum rarely welds reliably.
Same-day visits happen when a partner on the I-35 corridor has an open slot, but they are never guaranteed. Most jobs are scheduled within a few days once the scope and price range are confirmed from your photos.
A travel component is included in the estimate and depends on the partner’s base and your address. Canyon Lake and rural Comal County addresses may carry a larger travel component than in-town jobs near Loop 337.
Often. If the gate frame is straight and the hinge post has leaned, the post is reset or reinforced and the hinges re-welded. If the frame is racked or the post has rusted off at grade, replacement is cheaper.
Partners weld structural steel to an engineer’s drawing and the city permit. We do not design load-bearing members on-site. If you do not have a drawing, we can tell you what a structural engineer will need to see.
Outdoor welding during a Comal or Guadalupe County burn ban requires extra precautions and sometimes is not possible on grass or brush. Work inside a garage, on concrete or gravel can usually proceed with a fire watch.
Partners can repair and replicate simple ornamental details, scrollwork brackets and picket patterns so the repair blends in. Exact reproduction of cast ornament is a foundry job, which we will point out if that is what you have.
Yes. Stainless brackets, frames and railings are TIG welded with matching filler and the heat tint is cleaned so the stainless does not rust at the joint. Details are on the stainless welding page.
Payment terms are confirmed with the estimate. Partners stand behind their welds; if a repaired joint fails because of the weld itself, we arrange to make it right. Failures from hidden rust, overloading or impact are handled case by case.
