CUSTOM METAL FABRICATION

Metal Fabrication and Welding in Houston, TX

Houston is a build-it-to-last city. Salt air off Galveston Bay, nine months of humidity and the occasional hurricane punish bare steel. Alpha Mobile Welding TX coordinates custom fabrication through partner welders across the metro, from driveway gates in Memorial to equipment brackets near the Ship Channel. Some partners build in their own workshops; fit-up and installation happen at your property. Send a sketch, dimensions and photos, and we confirm a partner, a finish and a lead time.

Fabrication lead times depend on partner shop schedules and finish type.

Welding and metal repair in progress

Fabrication, not just repair

What custom fabrication looks like in Houston

A fabrication job starts with something that does not exist yet: a gate sized to a specific driveway opening, brackets that hold a condenser above a flood-prone slab, a trailer rack built around your kayaks. The partner welder cuts, fits, welds and finishes the new part, then brings it to the site for installation. That is different from the repair work covered on our Houston mobile welding page, where the job is fixing metal that already exists.

In Houston the finish matters as much as the weld. Mild steel with a rattle-can primer blooms orange within a season inside the Loop and faster near the bay. Partners quote hot-dip galvanizing, zinc-rich primer plus powder coat, or marine-grade aluminum depending on budget and look.

Alpha does not run a shop. We match your request with a partner who has the right equipment: a plasma table for sheet work, a tube bender for handrail returns, a spool gun for aluminum, or a heavy stick machine for plate.

  • Gates, fences, railings and guards built to your opening sizes
  • Brackets, frames, stands and racks from steel or aluminum
  • Truck, trailer and boat accessories sized to the vehicle
  • Commercial enclosures, bollards and dock hardware
  • Finish options matched to Gulf Coast humidity

Typical Houston requests

Custom jobs we coordinate across the metro

The fabrication requests that come up most often from Houston homeowners, property managers and contractors.

Hurricane-rated driveway gates

Swing and slide gates for Memorial, Bellaire and the Energy Corridor, framed in 2×2 tube with diagonal bracing, heavy hinges and posts set deep enough to resist strong gusts and soft clay.

Wrought-iron style fence panels

Ornamental steel fencing for Heights bungalows and River Oaks lots, with pickets welded on both sides, finials, and a galvanized base coat under powder coat so paint does not lift at the welds.

Commercial equipment enclosures

Lockable steel cages for HVAC condensers, generators and backflow preventers at strip centers along Westheimer and FM 1960, built to discourage copper theft while keeping service clearance.

Industrial brackets and supports

Pipe supports, conduit racks, platform brackets and guard frames for plants and terminals along the Ship Channel and in Pasadena, cut from plate and angle to the drawing you supply.

Aluminum boat and dock hardware

T-tops, leaning posts, rod holders, swim ladders and dock cleats in 6061 or 5052 aluminum for boats kept at Clear Lake, Kemah and Bolivar, TIG or spool-gun welded with 5356 filler.

Carports and patio frames

Freestanding steel carports and covered patio frames for homes in Katy, Cypress and Pearland, designed for wind uplift and finished to survive humidity without annual repainting.

Fabrication services

What partner shops build for Houston clients

Most requests fall into one of these categories; mixed jobs are quoted as one project.

Gates and automation-ready frames

Swing, cantilever and slide gates framed square and true, with weld-on hinge plates, latch posts and mounting pads for operators, coordinated with your gate-opener installer.

Railings and guards

Exterior stair rails, balcony guards and ADA-style handrails with grippable tops, closed ends and code-spaced pickets. Built in the shop, test-fit on site and anchored into concrete or framing.

Brackets, frames and stands

Mounting brackets for signage, awnings and equipment; stands for tanks and compressors; welded frames for countertops, workbenches and machine bases, with holes drilled to your bolt pattern.

Truck and trailer builds

Headache racks, ladder racks, flatbed sides, toolbox mounts and trailer tie-down rails. Trailer modifications include fender replacement, ramp fabrication and axle-bracket work.

Commercial and site hardware

Bollards, dumpster gates, dock bumpers, stair stringers, roof-access ladders and cage enclosures for retail, medical and warehouse properties across Harris County.

Aluminum and stainless pieces

Marine-grade aluminum for boats and docks, stainless handrails and kitchen frames for restaurants and food plants, welded with the right filler and cleaned so they stay bright.

Why Alpha Welding

Why Houston clients route fabrication through Alpha

Finding a fabricator with open shop time and the right finish source is the hard part; we handle that matching.

One contact, many shops

You describe the part once. We find the partner whose equipment and schedule fit, rather than you calling shops across 600 square miles.

Finish planned up front

Galvanizing, powder coat and primer choices are built into the estimate so the part arrives ready for Houston weather.

Shop build, site install

Parts are fabricated where there is a table, a saw and a crane, then installed by a mobile welder who can adjust to real conditions.

Honest lead times

We tell you what the partner shop is actually running, including galvanizer turnaround, instead of promising dates nobody can hit.

How it works

How a Houston fabrication request moves

Four steps from idea to installed metal.

01

Send what you have

A sketch on paper, rough dimensions, photos of the location and a note on finish. CAD drawings help but are not required.

02

We confirm a partner and price

We match the request to a partner welder, review material and finish options with you, and send a written estimate.

03

Fabrication and finishing

The partner builds the piece in their workshop or on site, then it goes to galvanizing or powder coat if quoted.

04

Delivery and installation

The finished part is delivered, test-fit, anchored and welded on site. You walk the job before it is closed out.

Local guide

Fabricating metal that survives Houston

A few things specific to Houston shape every fabrication estimate, from the steel grade to the day the installer shows up.

Humidity, salt and the right finish

Houston sits at 70 to 90 percent relative humidity most of the year and the bay breeze carries chloride well inside Beltway 8. Bare mild steel pits quickly and painted steel fails first at the welds where primer is thinnest. For anything outdoors, partners quote hot-dip galvanizing when the piece fits the galvanizer kettle, or a zinc-rich epoxy primer with a polyester powder topcoat when color matters. Galvanized parts need vent and drain holes in closed tube, so that is planned at the drawing stage. Aluminum avoids rust but needs isolation from steel fasteners to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Hurricane and wind loads on gates and fences

Harris County sits in a high design-wind zone under current building code maps. A solid-panel gate acts like a sail; a picket gate lets wind through but still loads the hinges. Partners frame wide gates in 2×2 or 2×3 steel tube with a diagonal brace from the bottom hinge corner to the top latch corner, use weld-on barrel hinges with grease fittings, and set posts in concrete below the clay shrink zone. For solid privacy gates, HOAs in Memorial and Cinco Ranch often ask for engineering letters; we tell you up front when a design needs one.

Completed aluminum welding job

Ship Channel and industrial brackets

Refineries, terminals and chemical plants from the Turning Basin to Baytown generate steady bracket, support and guard work. These jobs usually come with a drawing, a material spec (A36 plate, A500 tube, A53 pipe) and sometimes a weld procedure requirement. Partners who serve these sites fabricate to the print, keep mill certs when requested, and know that structural or pressure-boundary work needs an engineer and often a third-party inspector. Alpha routes the request to a partner set up for it and states the requirement in the estimate.

Aluminum for boats, docks and coastal homes

From Clear Lake marinas to bay houses on Bolivar, aluminum is the default for anything that touches salt water. Partners weld 6061-T6 structural pieces and 5052 sheet with GTAW for thin, visible work and spool-gun GMAW for thicker stock, using 5356 filler for strength or 4043 where crack sensitivity is the concern. Heat-affected-zone softening in 6061 is real, so load-bearing pieces are sized with that in mind. Anything touching a fuel system is flagged for a partner comfortable with that scope.

Commercial enclosures and site security

Property managers along Westheimer, the Galleria area and Northwest Freeway ask for condenser cages, generator enclosures, bollards and dumpster gates that stand up to thieves and delivery trucks alike. Expanded-metal cages with hinged, padlockable panels keep airflow while making copper theft slow and loud. Bollards are 4 or 6 inch schedule 40 pipe set in concrete and filled, with removable sleeves where fire lanes need access.

Permits, HOAs and lead times

The City of Houston generally requires a permit for tall fences, structural carports and anything attached to a commercial building; unincorporated Harris County and the master-planned communities in Katy, Cypress and The Woodlands have their own fence-height and material rules. Build approval time into the schedule. Typical lead times run one to two weeks for brackets and small frames, two to four weeks for gates and railings, plus a week for galvanizing or powder coat.

What to send for an accurate estimate

  • A sketch with overall dimensions and the opening or footprint size
  • Photos of the site, including where the part mounts
  • Material preference if you have one (steel, aluminum, stainless)
  • Finish: galvanized, powder coat color, primed only or raw
  • Any drawing, HOA guideline or engineering requirement you already have

Not sure if your idea is buildable?

Send the sketch anyway. A partner fabricator can usually tell from a photo and two dimensions whether it works and what it will cost.

FAQs

Houston fabrication questions

Straight answers to what clients ask before they send a drawing.

No. Alpha coordinates fabrication through independent partner welders in the Houston area. Some partners operate their own workshops with tables, saws and plasma equipment; others build on site. We match your job to the right one and manage the estimate and schedule.

Call 979-250-7486 or use the estimate form. Include a sketch or description, overall dimensions, photos of where the part will go and your preferred finish. We confirm feasibility and lead time with a partner and send a written quote before any metal is cut.

Hot-dip galvanizing followed by powder coat is the most durable combination for steel outdoors here. Galvanizing alone works where appearance is secondary. For bayside properties, marine-grade aluminum avoids rust entirely. Painted mild steel needs recoating every few years.

Yes, within the limits of good design. Partners frame gates with diagonal bracing, heavy weld-on hinges and deep-set posts, and avoid oversized solid panels. For very large or solid gates, an engineer’s letter may be required by your HOA or the city.

Both. Contractors and plant maintenance teams usually send a drawing with material callouts, and partners build to it. Homeowners send a sketch and photos, and the partner proposes dimensions and tube sizes. You approve the design before fabrication starts.

Small brackets and frames typically run one to two weeks. Gates, railings and enclosures run two to four weeks depending on shop load. Galvanizing or powder coat adds roughly a week. We quote a realistic window rather than a guaranteed date.

Yes. The partner fabricates in their workshop, then a mobile welder delivers, test-fits, anchors and welds the piece in place. Field adjustments such as trimming a post or adding a gusset are done with a portable machine at your property.

Often. The City of Houston permits tall fences and most commercial attachments, and master-planned communities enforce their own height, style and color rules. We ask about HOA guidelines early, but obtaining approval is the property owner’s responsibility.

Yes, through partners equipped for aluminum. T-tops, leaning posts, rod holders, ladders and dock hardware in 6061 or 5052 are common requests from Clear Lake and Kemah boat owners. Anything touching a fuel system or hull structure gets extra review before quoting.

Estimates are based on material weight and grade, cutting and welding hours, finish cost and delivery or installation time. We send a written total with assumptions listed. Changes after approval are re-quoted before the partner proceeds.
