GATE WELDING & HINGE REPAIR

Gate Welding That Fixes the Sag, Not Just the Symptom

A gate that drags, will not latch or hangs off one hinge is usually a welding problem underneath a hardware problem. Alpha Mobile Welding TX coordinates partner welders who come to your driveway, ranch entrance or commercial yard with the rig on the truck. They repair hinges, replace failed posts, straighten bent frames and fabricate new gates when repair no longer makes sense, on swing, slide and cantilever gates. Call 979-250-7486 or send the estimate form with a photo of the hinge side.

Same-day gate repair is subject to partner availability in your area.

Gate welding explained

What gate welding covers on a typical call

Gate welding is the repair, reinforcement and fabrication of steel gates and the posts that carry them. Most residential driveway gates are built from square tube steel, usually 1 to 2 inch frame members with 5/8 or 3/4 inch pickets, hung on a 4 to 6 inch post set in concrete. Everything the gate does depends on three welded joints: hinge to post, hinge to frame, and frame corners. When any of them cracks, the whole gate shifts.

Swing gates pivot on hinges and carry their full weight as a lever on the hinge post. Slide gates roll on a track or rollers and depend on a straight bottom rail and solid guide posts. Cantilever gates hang from rollers on two posts and need a counterbalance section that stays square. Each type fails in its own way, which is why a welder should see the gate before quoting more than a rough range.

For automated gates, the operator, photo eyes and loop detectors belong to the gate operator installer; the welder’s job is the frame, hinges, mounts and posts the operator pushes against, finished square before the operator is readjusted.

  • Swing, slide and cantilever gate frames
  • Weld-on barrel hinges, J-bolt and bearing hinges
  • Hinge post replacement and re-setting in concrete
  • Operator arm and bracket mounts
  • New gate fabrication to match existing fence

Common failures

Why gates sag, drag and stop latching

Almost every gate complaint traces back to one of these six causes.

Hinge welds cracked

The top hinge on a swing gate carries tension every time the gate moves. A cold-lap weld from the original install cracks after a few thousand cycles, and the gate drops at the latch end until it drags.

Post rusted at grade

Steel posts rust fastest at the soil line, where moisture and oxygen meet. A post can look fine above ground and be paper thin an inch below. Push it; if it flexes, the base is gone.

Undersized post or footing

A 2 inch post on a 16 foot double gate was never going to hold. Expansive clay in much of Texas heaves footings seasonally, which rotates small posts and throws the gate out of plumb.

Frame racked or bent

Vehicle contact, kids riding the gate and years of slamming push a rectangle into a parallelogram. The diagonals tell the story, and the fix is cutting, squaring and re-bracing.

Worn hinge pins and bushings

Plain barrel hinges run steel on steel. Once the pin wears oval the gate sags even with perfect welds. Upgrading to greased bearing hinges solves it and lengthens operator life.

Operator pushing a bad gate

An automatic opener keeps driving a gate that binds until the arm bracket tears off or the motor burns out. The metal must be fixed first; the operator is adjusted after.

Gate services

Gate repair and fabrication a partner welder can do on site

Most of this work finishes in one visit with the gate rehung before the truck leaves.

Hinge repair and replacement

Grinding out failed hinge welds, re-welding or replacing with weld-on barrel hinges, J-bolt hinges for pipe posts, or heavy-duty bearing hinges rated for the gate weight and drilled for grease.

Post replacement

Cutting out a rusted or undersized hinge post, excavating and setting a new Schedule 40 post in concrete, then rehanging the gate plumb and level with the latch post.

Straightening and reinforcing

Pulling a racked frame back to square, adding diagonal braces and corner gussets, and replacing bent pickets or rails so the gate holds its shape under its own weight.

Operator mounts and brackets

Fabricating and welding arm brackets, pad mounts and rear posts for swing and slide operators, placed where the installer specifies so the arm geometry is right.

Latches, drop rods and stops

Welding gravity latches, slide bolts, drop rods with ground receivers and center stops so a double gate meets cleanly and locks without lifting one leaf.

New gate fabrication

Building replacement swing or slide gates from tube steel, matching picket spacing, finials and rail heights on the existing fence, including ranch pipe gates and ornamental panels.

Why Alpha Welding

Why property owners call Alpha for gate work

We coordinate welders who treat a gate as a structure, not a hardware swap.

Gate experience matched to the job

We route your request to a partner who regularly hangs gates, not a general fabricator guessing at hinge geometry.

Fix the cause

Sag gets traced to the hinge, post or frame that caused it, so the repair lasts instead of returning next season.

Operator-aware work

Welders coordinate with your gate operator installer and disconnect power and batteries before any arc is struck near electronics.

Honest scope

If a post needs to come out or the gate needs replacing, you hear it before work starts, with the price difference explained.

How it works

From a dragging gate to a working gate

Four steps, usually inside one visit for repairs.

01

Send photos and measurements

Gate width, hinge side, post size and a photo of the sag. Note whether an operator is installed.

02

Estimate and scheduling

We confirm a partner welder for your area, give a price range and set a time window, subject to availability.

03

On-site repair

The welder inspects posts and hinges, disconnects any operator, makes the repair and rehangs the gate square.

04

Finish and walkthrough

Welds are ground, primed and touched up. You test the swing, latch and operator before the welder leaves.

Technical guide

What good gate welding looks like in the field

These are the decisions a competent gate welder makes on site, explained so you can judge the work and the estimate.

Hinge selection and placement

Weld-on barrel hinges are the standard for tube gates: a steel pin in a sleeve, half welded to the post and half to the frame. Placing the top hinge as high as possible and the bottom as low as possible spreads the lever load. J-bolt hinges thread through a pipe post and suit ranch gates where adjustability matters. Heavy-duty bearing hinges use a thrust bearing and grease fitting, the right choice for gates over 150 pounds or anything automated. The welder aligns both pins on one vertical axis and welds with 7018 stick or MIG with full fusion into the post wall rather than the thin edge of the hinge leaf.

Posts, footings and Texas clay

A hinge post is a cantilever driven into the ground. For a single 12 foot leaf, a 4 inch Schedule 40 post in a 12 inch by 36 inch concrete footing is a common minimum; double gates and heavy ornamental leaves go to 6 inch posts and deeper footings. In expansive clay across Houston, Dallas and Central Texas, shallow footings heave and tilt, so going below the active zone helps. Rust at grade is addressed by cutting above the damage and sleeving with a larger tube or replacing outright, then sloping concrete away from the post.

Welding and metal repair in progress

Welding near gate operators

Automated gates carry control boards, limit switches, backup batteries and sometimes solar charge controllers. Striking an arc with the operator still connected can route current through the board and destroy it. The welder disconnects AC power and the battery, unplugs the arm or chain, and clamps the ground close to the weld. Mount brackets are welded at the geometry the installer marks. Installers follow UL 325 for automated gate safety, so entrapment zones, photo eyes and edge sensors are left to them once the metal work is done.

Straightening and bracing a racked frame

A racked gate measures longer on one diagonal. The welder cuts the failed corner or brace, pulls the frame square with a come-along or porta-power, then welds in a diagonal brace from the top hinge corner down to the bottom latch corner so the gate hangs in tension. Triangular gussets at the hinge corners add stiffness without weight. Heat-straightening works on tube that is bent but not kinked; a kinked rail is cut out and replaced.

Galvanized and powder-coated gates

Welding on galvanized steel burns off the zinc, releases fumes that cause metal fume fever, and leaves porosity in the weld. The welder grinds the coating back an inch or two from the joint, works with ventilation, welds, then restores the finish with cold galvanizing compound and color-matched touch-up. Powder coat is ground off the same way. Pre-finished ornamental gates lose their factory warranty once welded, so on cosmetic gates we discuss whether a bolt-on repair or a replacement panel keeps the finish intact.

Ranch gates, cattle guards and HOA rules

Ranch and livestock gates are built from 2 3/8 or 2 7/8 inch pipe, often reclaimed oilfield tubing, hung on pipe posts with J-bolt hinges. Repairs include cracked saddle welds, bent bottom rails from livestock pressure and worn hinge bolts. Cattle guards get cracked rail welds and crushed end plates. In subdivisions, HOA rules often dictate picket spacing, height, color and finial style, so send the HOA spec sheet with your photos.

What to check before you call

  • Measure the gate width and height and note the post diameter
  • Photograph each hinge, the latch and the base of the hinge post
  • Note whether the gate is galvanized, painted or powder coated
  • Tell us if an operator, keypad or solar panel is installed
  • Mention any HOA or community appearance requirements

Is the gate too far gone to repair?

If the frame is rusted through at more than one rail or the post must come out anyway, a new gate often costs little more than a rebuild.

FAQs

Gate welding questions we hear most

Straight answers on hinges, posts, operators and cost.

Usually, yes. If the frame is sound, sag is corrected by re-welding or replacing the hinges, squaring the frame and adding a diagonal brace. If the hinge post has rotated or rusted at grade, the post is replaced and the gate rehung on it.

Re-welding a cracked hinge is a short job priced mostly on the call-out. Replacing both hinges with bearing hinges adds parts. A new hinge post with concrete is the largest common repair. Send photos and we give a range before scheduling.

Yes, the metal side of them. The welder disconnects the operator and battery, repairs the frame, hinges or mounts, and leaves reconnection and safety sensor setup to your gate operator installer, who works to UL 325.

It depends on leaf width and weight. Many 10 to 12 foot single leaves run on 4 inch posts; wide, tall or ornamental double gates go to 6 inch. In expansive clay, footing depth matters as much as post size.

Yes. The coating is ground back from the joint, the weld is made with ventilation, and the area is refinished with cold galvanizing and touch-up paint. Expect a visible repair zone on a factory-finished gate.

Yes. Partner welders fabricate swing and slide gates from tube steel with matching picket spacing, rail heights and finials, or pipe gates for ranch entrances. Send a photo of the fence and the opening width.

Expansive clay swells with moisture and shrinks in heat, tilting shallow posts, and steel expands in summer sun. A deeper footing and a braced frame usually ends seasonal dragging.

Yes. Common jobs are bent bottom rails, worn roller brackets, broken guide posts and racked counterbalance sections. The welder checks roller alignment after the frame is squared.

Often, subject to partner availability in your area. A gate stuck open on a commercial yard or a livestock gate that will not close gets priority when a partner can reach you that day.

If you send the HOA guideline for height, spacing and color, the welder matches it. Rules vary by community, so confirming before fabrication avoids a rework.
